The optimal singing voice

What are the preconditions for a well-functioning singing voice, and what is meant by good vocal material?

A well-functioning, anatomically and functionally intact larynx.

The anatomy of the larynx should be reasonably symmetrical with favourable muscular conditions, symmetrical nerve supply (i.e. symmetrical mobility), irritation-free and moist mucous membrane conditions, smooth vocal fold edges and good vocal fold closure when sounding. Intact brreathing, i.e. sufficient lung volume, optimal breath control for a measured release of exhaled air through the vocal folds.

Breathing plays a key role in vocalisation; after all, the vocal folds are set in vibration for sound by the exhalation flow.

Through the activity of the inspiratory muscles during exhalation, the airflow can be slowed down and conducted, i.e. delivered in precise doses. For optimal success, training and practise is required.

A good vocal technique

Good vocal technique means being able to produce adequate sounds in terms of volume, resonance and sound quality with minimal strain on the larynx.

A good vocal technique is achieved through good breath control, a balance of muscle activity throughout the body, especially the larynx, as well as good setting of the resonance space by the organs of the articulation (lips, tongue, palate and throat muscles) during inhalation.

Mental stability

The entire set of our physical functions are influenced by the state of the psyche. This especially applies for the voice production. Generally, the quality of the singing voice can be significantly improved in a happy, joyful mood compared to an indifferent or even somber mood.
